Guide to shopping in Abuja

Abuja is home to a vast majority of international and local travellers. Personally, my love for this city can be attributed to the fact that I've lived in this city for more than two decades. It was easy

to find my way around when I came visiting three weeks ago; however, there were new places that I found interesting. Abuja has several malls, I visited some old & new malls and the open-air markets. For the interest of tourists, this guide focuses on the malls and markets in Abuja.

1. Jabi lake mall- Jabi lake mall is the first waterfront Mall in Abuja. For this reason, it has become one of the most visited malls for its iconic location. I always have an outstanding experience whenever I visit. This one-stop mall is a retail and leisure destination with a variety of affordable and pricey products. Commonly visited outlets in the mall include Shoprite, Game, Pep, Mini so, Dominos Pizza, Casabella, Coldstone, Pinkberry, Dominos Pizza, and Silverbird Cinema. I particularly enjoy shopping here because of the items I get for my son from Pep, Mini so and Shoprite.

Location: Jabi District, Abuja.

2. Grand Square: Famous for its bread, this is one of Abuja's ultramodern shopping centres. It has been in existence for quite a while, and the residents of Abuja have been accustomed to getting their essentials from here.  It's one of the older shopping centres in Abuja. One particular reason I go to this departmental store is because of the aforementioned bread. If only words could describe how sumptuous it tastes. Apart from the grocery, pharmacy and electronics section downstairs, some other stores are upstairs like baby and children store, intercontinental restaurant, optician and furniture store.

Location: Central Business District.

3. Sahad stores: This is one of Abuja's oldest and best supermarkets based on my assessment.  It has two branches in Abuja. Virtually everything you need can be found in this well organized Shopping Centre at affordable prices. It has wheelchair accessibility within the store. Each floor is for a specific group of items, for instance, 2nd floor for groceries, clothes and cosmetics. Customers can now place orders and get their items delivered to their doorsteps. An interesting fact about this shopping centre is you can pay in any currency, how cool is that! A bonus tip, you can get the most sumptuous Suya, Masa and Sharwama just a few meters away.

Its locations are Central Business District, and Garki. For more information, visit www.sahadstore.com.

4. Silverbird: This 5-storey mall is a one-stop mall for all essentials and regular items, including boutiques, pharmacy, makeup outlet, office supplies store, photography studio, Shoprite, restaurants, game area, cinema, bank, and much more. I love the game area in this mall because it is one of the best places to have fun with family and friends even if you do nothing else.

It’s located in the Central Business District.

5.Apo mall: Also known as Novare mall. This used to be one of my favourite malls when I lived a couple of kilometres away from it. It isn’t as big as the others mentioned in this post, but it caters to most visitors' needs. You may not have the luxury of checking out a particular item in other stores within the mall due to the lack of a variety of stores selling the same products. This mall is at a prime location for those travelling out of the city.

This mall is located at Apo.

7. Novare Central Park Mall: I particularly like this mall because it’s situated on the road that leads to the airport and out of the City Centre. It has popular outlets such as Grab n Go, Shoprite, PEP, and so on. In case you miss a thing or two to buy in the city centre, This mall has got you covered.

8. Next Cash and Carry: This hypermarket has everything you need ranging from foodstuff, clothes, shoes, home appliances, furniture etc. It's basically a one-stop hypermarket to make shopping easier. In summary, this mall is good, you should definitely check it out!

Other hyper and supermarkets include:

4u supermarket: located in Wuse.

Pay green hypermarket: located in Wuse.

Chocolate mall: located in Wuse.

Dunes Centre: located in Maitama.

Garki supermarket: located in Garki 2.

Citymart: located in Gwagwalada and Suncity Estate.

The open-air markets are located in different districts in Abuja. They include:

Garki 2 Market.

Garki Ultra-Modern Market.

Utako Market.

Wuse Market.

Area One Shopping Centre.

Area Two Shopping Centre.

Karmo Market.

Dubai Abuja International Market.

Idu Market.

Apo Resettlement Market.

Wuye International Market.

Durumi Market.

Lugbe Market.

Nyanya Market.

Mararaba Market.

Of course, when I visit a new mall or supermarket, I will update my post.

If you've visited any of these places, what was your experience?
