10 myths about self-care (and the truth)

Self-care has been one way most people seek to work on themselves both physically and mentally. It

simply means the process of caring for your wellbeing by taking the necessary actions. However, there are some myths about self-care which will be discussed below.

1. It means you’re selfish.

On the contrary, self-care makes you more attentive to how best you can be for yourself and your loved ones.

2. It’s time-consuming.

Developing a strategy that works with your schedule is advisable.

3. It makes you develop anxiety.

Self-care should be more about being your self and doing what works best for you. If you start getting anxious about anything, you may need to change your self-care pattern or seek help if necessary.

4. It makes you judgemental.

Caring for yourself shouldn’t make you judgmental at all. The whole point of self-care is to promote positivity; therefore if you are becoming judgemental, you may need to ask yourself some questions about why you are caring for yourself again.

5. It makes you less appreciative.

On the contrary, self-care makes you grateful. In fact, some people practice gratitude daily as part of their self-care.

6. It makes you rigid.

Self-care may make you change some of your habits, behaviours or conversations for the better. You may seem rigid to those close to you, but they will get used to the new you when they know the reasons for the change.

7, It is expensive

It totally depends on how you want to care for yourself. Some touted self-care products or places may be beyond your budget. However, there are free ways to practice self-care, such as resting, eating healthier, meditation, etc.

8. It makes you seem self-righteous.

You can’t control the thoughts of others; you can only make yourself better.

9. It leads to allergies.

This journey makes you know more about yourself; therefore, before you start using new products, it’s advisable to ask the right people.

10. It makes you a phoney.

The purpose of caring for yourself is to make you more authentic and positive. Therefore in the process, people close to you may wonder what is going on, so if you feel the need to reintroducing yourself to people, do so otherwise enjoy the journey.
