4 Different parenting styles

One of the articles I read recently was about the four major types of parenting styles. I

have heard about various ways parents raise their children but haven't looked into it. When I was done reading the article, I realized there's a whole lot of role parenting styles can play in impacting the lives of children.

The article explained the research that was conducted on some children using various methods, described the four major parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved parents & their benefits and gave reasons for the limitations in the various parenting styles. 

I am of the opinion that parenting styles involve the actions and relationships between parents and their children whether the parents are together or not. These styles could be as a result of the parents' religious beliefs and moral values, upbringing (how they were raised), subconscious behaviors that become evident when interacting with their children, pressure from other parents to adopt an approach, ongoing stress or what they believe is the most effective method of raising their children.

Overall, it was a good read. As a new parent, I’m still trying to figure out what to do since he’s still young but ultimately I believe it’s important to seek ways to improve ourselves and learn how best to raise our children. What may work for one child may not be effective for other children because everyone is different. For instance, I saw an article on how to calm a crying baby when he doesn’t get what he wants. I applied what I read and it totally worked! I couldn’t believe I had been doing it the wrong way or better still, using a longer and more stressful approach. In my case, I was putting myself in his shoes by trying to do what I’d expect someone to do to me if I were in a similar situation as a child. Apart from what’s obviously different between us, he prefers a different strategy so talking, singing, playing with him didn't help the situation.

In conclusion, knowing our parenting styles and the result we seek to achieve by applying the method(s) may go a long way to impact the lives of our children. May God help us. You can read the full article here - Different Parenting Styles
