As a business psychologist, goal setting is one particular
topic that improves productivity and motivation, however, there are times when it doesn’t produce the desired result not because goal setting is negative but because of the idea around it.
You see, most people believe that setting goals may lead to aiming for an unrealistic result, competition, lack of motivation and challenges which shouldn’t be. The act of goal setting should lead to a growth mindset.
As a coach, it is important to identify what works for the clients you have and how to offer solutions to problems. Having a growth mindset is the ability to know where you are and have a realistic idea of where you want to be by applying flexible approaches. In my opinion goal setting is important in achieving a growth mindset but with flexibility. It doesn’t mean you have to achieve all your goals and then punish yourself for whatever shortcomings you encounter but rather celebrate what you have been able to achieve, learn from your mistakes or errors and equip yourself to be a better version of you. Goal setting leads to a growth mindset and makes you more responsible, accountable and productive. It shouldn’t be done as a way of competing with other but rather to see yourself accomplishing things in ways you never knew you could.
In conclusion, the purpose of goal setting shouldn’t be to set yourself up for destruction with unrealistic goals but to enhance your ability to grow and develop.
