Life is full of unexpected events; pleasant and unpleasant. There are various experiences that may make us lose who we truly are or a part of ourselves. For instance, the loss of a loved one, the end of relationship, divorce, failures, rejections, stress, sickness and so on. The experiences may be out of our control, however, we can to some extent control how we act and feel about these experiences.
Rediscovering yourself is a process that requires patience, effort and gratitude. The simplest ways to begin this journey (irrespective of the situation) are to:
1. Remember what you are passionate about: This could be your skills, hobbies and talents.
2. Meet up with old friends: This depends on what made you lose yourself. If it was due to loss of untrustworthy friends, I will suggest you meet up with close relatives or anyone you feel you can trust.
3. Go to your favorite spots: Again, if this was as a result of a breakup or loss of a loved one, I won't advise you to visit places you and your ex used to go, it will only remind you of the past. You could go to new places and create new memories. This will be a suitable option for people who feel they have failed in their careers, exams or new moms who feel they have lost their identity.
4. Listen to/ sing along to your favorite song: This can help you regain confidence in yourself and in God ( I will suggest worship songs)
5. Watch movies: Comedies
6. Look at pictures: Look at how far you have come, if for nothing else, be grateful you are alive
7. Help others: Helping others will give you a good feeling and will make the journey towards rediscovering yourself easier.
8. Gratitude: Think of little things to be grateful for. Dont magnify the situation, rather magnify God's faithfulness in your life.
9. Make out time for your hair: This is a good one, based on personal experience, good hair equals good week but it is totally up to you.
10. Speak to a counselor/professional: I will recommend this option for those who can't seem to overcome this situation. Know that it is okay not to be okay and in your state, it is okay to seek help.
11. Pray: This works all the time, talk to God about your situation and believe he will help you.
