Change is one natural phenomenon that remains constant; a change in ones lifestyle, diet, decision making and even personalities. The question usually asked isn't why this occurs but how people adapt to change? One of these changes may be evident at workplaces; a change in career. While this isn't a
strange thought that pops up in the minds of individuals, one must be ready to embark on the journey. Here are few things to consider before making a major change in your career.- The 5 Ws 1 H questions:
If you are considering a change in your career you need to figure out what kind of career change you want to opt for, why you need the change, when you need to start, where you want to be in your next career, who can help you achieve your goals and also get clear on how this can make you find fulfilment. For instance, I am an Accountant (B.Sc) and have worked in this field for about two years. Although accounting is a great profession, I didn't find fulfilment as an accountant. I wanted to work directly with helping people achieve their goals especially in the workplace so I opted for an M.Sc in Business Psychology and have worked as a organisation coach and business development consultant. Getting clear on your career change to is the first step. Again, change might not be immediate, it could take a while to be achieved but this should have a time frame otherwise you might end up not changing at all; a change mindset without a time frame is a wish. Now ask yourself; In what ways would you like to find fulfilment through your career change?
2. Have both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation:
Motivation improves self-determination and persistence, being intrinsically and extrinsically motivated will bring balance to your career change; i.e being passionate about the change and deriving an external reward such as a good salary or positive feedback can provide a balance. Research has shown that extrinsic motivation plays a huge role in positive reinforcement as long as there's a balance between the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; however, it totally depends on what you choose to focus on.
3. Be certified in your new field:
Some professions require a certain level of qualification before you can be certified to work, therefore, it will be wise to do more research in the specific career you are opting for to know the kind of qualifications you will need and how long it will take to get qualified.
4. Be determined to succeed:
Motivation can take you to an extent while opting for a change but what happens when you are faced with a lot of difficulties? I always tell my coaching clients these; remember why you embarked on the journey, not all success stories are smooth, the hurdles and obstacles you face will make you stronger when you overcome. So, have a positive mindset and be determined to succeed.
5. Share your decision with your support system;
Not everyone may understand why you need the change especially if they think you have a good job and you live comfortably. These might not be exactly what makes you fulfilled and no, they won't just understand. What you can do is, share your decision (if you need to) with people who can support you, give constructive criticism when needed, desire to see you find fulfilment in life and are generally happy for your progress.
