In an ideal world, curls would dry to undone, spiraled perfection without any effort. We'd also have three-day weekends always and need to shave never, so basically, not going to happen. With a few small tweaks, though, shrunken coils can be elongated and ringlets can become full without frizz. And it doesn't matter whether you air-
dry or prefer to use a diffuser—there's a trick for every style and method.
Loosen up. If you want to preserve your curl pattern but just stretch out the length of each twist, attach duckbill or croc clips near the ends when hair is damp, says hairstylist Kim Kimble. Then air-dry or dry with a diffuser as usual. The weight from the clips will pull the curls down to prevent shrinkage.
Dial down. Diffusers can give loose, fine curls a boost of springy volume. Just be sure to decrease the heat and airflow settings to medium. Too much of either can disrupt the spiral shape or puff hair into a frizz cloud.
Set faster. Flexi rods are a great way to set tight curls into a defined pattern. Rolling them up into damp hair, however, can mean hours of drying time. "I prefer to blow-dry, rub my Bounce Back [Curl Revitalizer] across the hair shaft to set, and then roll," says Kimble. "It gives you that curly look and dries much faster, probably 30 minutes, because your hair is blow-dried first."
